Description
A rebellious reimagining of the classic Eau de Cologne.
Created for Commune de Paris — the daring, design-driven Parisian collective — Astier de Villatte and perfumer Françoise Caron unveil Cologne 1871, a fragrance that feels both provocatively modern and steeped in history.
It opens with a sharp, exhilarating burst of Sicilian lemon, rosemary, and bergamot — bright, irreverent, and full of attitude. Beneath this lively first impression lies a softer, nostalgic heart: powdery notes reminiscent of 19th-century Parisian perfumery. Suave labdanum, benzoin, cedarwood, patchouli, and vetiver create a warm, resinous depth.
What makes Cologne 1871 truly subversive is the addition of two groundbreaking synthetics — coumarin (fresh-cut grass) and benzaldehyde (almond) — the very first molecules ever created by perfumery science. Their presence lends an unexpected modernity to this otherwise classic structure, resulting in a fragrance that’s crisp, cultured, and quietly radical.
Key Notes: Italian Lemon, Rosemary, Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Lavender Absolute, Labdanum, Benzoin, Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedarwood, Coumarin, Benzaldehyde
