Description
A tribute to the island that gave incense its soul.
Astier de Villatte’s Awaji Incense is crafted on the Japanese island of Awaji — the birthplace of the world’s finest incense and home to an unbroken, thousand-year tradition. Its fragrance is soft and elemental: driftwood carried by the tide, warm resins, jasmine petals, and sun-kissed immortelle. Legend tells of a piece of agarwood washed ashore centuries ago; its smoke was so mesmerizing that the islanders offered it to the Emperor and later built a sanctuary in its honor. This incense carries that same quiet magic — simple, pure, and deeply transportive.
Each stick is handmade by Master Koh-shis, artisans who follow an ancient four-stage ritual: blending natural woods and herbs, kneading the aromatic dough, cutting it into slender ribbons, and letting it dry for days in the island’s west wind. The result is incense of exceptional clarity, refinement, and depth.
A box contains approximately 125 sticks, each offering 30 minutes of serene, fragrant burn.
