Part of the artist's "Panel" series, "Stripe I" is a continuation of Meehan's contemporary, minimalist concepts while incorporating new treatments of his materials.

After his extensive travels through Japan, Pierce was deeply inspired by Japanese architecture and aesthetics. “Stripe I” utilizes the 18th century technique of Shou Sugi Ban (or Yakisugi), a method of preserving wood by charring the surface that creates a deep charcoal-black color. Usually found on the exterior of homes and buildings, this concept is brought into the interior by the artist, making this piece a sophisticated embodiment of his appreciation of the craftsmanship of Pacific cultures.
